Our top 5 houseplant benefits

If you’re anything like us, you don’t need to read up on the benefits of houseplants because well… you’re already sold… but if you are interested in the real reasons why they could add some positivity to your life then you’ve come to the right page. We’ve rounded up five houseplant benefits that will make you “ooh la la”.

Therapeutic matters

As well as being a productive hobby, plant therapy (professionally known as horticultural therapy) can be used to increase feelings of well-being among people who are suffering with mental illness by reducing stress levels. We love this Fred’s Garden candle from Good Candles who donate a % of profits to CALM, the Campaign Against Living Miserably.

Air quality control

The conversation started in the 1980’s when a NASA researcher was looking for ways to improve air quality in the spacecraft. They concluded roots and soil of houseplants reduced volatile airborne compounds significantly. It’s also said having an improved quality of air can also help with healing, pain tolerance and any respiratory illness. A few we recommend are a Rubber Tree, Spider Plant or Boston Fern.

A fresher breath

Now we know houseplants make our air cleaner, that must mean we’re breathing in a better source of oxygen too? Correct!

When we breathe, our body takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, so how do plants come into the mix? Essentially, they do the opposite of what we do when we breathe: release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, meaning the air is fresher for longer.

Better focus

A number of studies have revealed working with plants can have a pretty interesting effect, and we think it totally makes sense. Just like being in nature, being around plants indoors helps to improve concentration, memory and productivity. So if you’re looking for a little afternoon boost make sure your desk cacti are ready to take their seats.

Aesthetics count

Not only do houseplants have a range of positive health benefits, they look pretty damn good too. Whether you’re going for a minimalist terrarium or more of a maximalist look with the latest from your local garden centre, you can’t go too wrong.
